Located on the Deerfoot Trail section of Highway 2, the tiny hamlet of Balzac is 3.2 km (2 mi.) north of Calgary's northern city limits and the Calgary International Airport. Established as a Canadian Pacific Railway station in 1910, Balzac was named by the then president of CPR, William Cornelius Van Horne, after one of his favourite writers, Honore de Balzac, a famous French novelist. As well as the train station, the other mainstay of a community is the Post Office. Opened under the name of Beddington in 1912, it was changed to Balzac in 1925.

Lying in such close proximity to the City of Calgary, Balzac offers easy access to a wealth of exciting leisure, historical and entertainment opportunities in Calgary for everyone to enjoy. Don't miss the world famous Calgary Stampede, a ten day extravaganza, held annually in July and starting the first Friday after the July 1st Canada Day holiday.

Balzac accommodations include nearby hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and campgrounds.
