Known as Calgary's "Backyard Adventure Playground", Bragg Creek is only 30 km (18.6 mi.) west of Calgary on Highway 8 near the intersection with Highway 22X. With a population of around 700, it's officially a "designated place" or unincorporated hamlet. Named for George Bragg, an early homesteader, Bragg Creek enjoys an economy based on recreation and ranching.
Bragg Creek is well known as the filming location for the popular television show North of 60. An easy day trip from Calgary can take in mountain scenery and the quaint shops in the town that's home to more artists per capita than any other community in Alberta. The nearby recreational areas include Bragg Creek Provincial Park with picnicking, hiking and fishing. A relaxed 2 hour walk along the Centennial Pathway leads through the forest, along the river bank, and past shopping and dining establishments in town. Serious cave hikers with the right gear will enjoy an estimated 8 hour hike at the Canyon Creek (or Bragg Creek) Ice Cave, a small cave in the limestone just 20 minutes west of Calgary. In the winter, cross country skiers can be found enjoying the area.
Bragg Creek offers bed & breakfasts and RV/campgrounds, to overnight visitors.
