Slave Lake, with a population of around 6,600 people, is located 250 km (155.3 mi.) northwest of Edmonton at the junction of Highways 2 and 88. Originally named Sawridge, the first town was mostly wiped out by a flood in the early 1930's and the second town was established 5 km further south of the mouth of the river and named Slave Lake. Today, oil & gas, forestry and tourism are the main business fields in the area.
Slave Lake is near the southeastern shore of Lesser Slave Lake, a popular Alberta recreational area with white sandy beaches, clear blue water, and swimming, fishing, boating, bird watching, and sandcastle building opportunities. Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park also offers old growth forest, a self guided forest hike trail, camping and wildlife viewing. In winter months visitors can cross country ski and ice fish in the area, or downhill ski at nearby Grizzly Ridge.
Rest at one of Slave Lake's hotels after your day in the outdoors.
