Tofield is 67 km (42 mi.) southeast of Edmonton -- about a forty minute drive. Nearby is Beaverhill Lake, a major attraction that provides feeding and resting habitat for shorebirds.

Cree Indians provide the pre European population; the local creeks of Maskawan, Amisk and Ketchamoot are Cre names.  After 1865, settlement began and the town of Tofield started in 1906 with a General Store and Post Office.

Tofield has it Museum and Nature Centre and is located close to Elk Island National Park and Cooking Lake - Blackfoot Grazing, Wildlife and Provincial Recreation Area.
