Banff: Lynxes and Cougars and Bears …

The town of Banff is inside Banff National Park. It’s weird because there’s been fairly intense development around the Banff townsite since the early 90s and there’s a contradiction between preserving natural spaces and catering to the latte and snacks needs of tourists. The result of the simultaneous development and wildlife preservation is the fact you can have encounters with wildlife in Banff. If wildlife viewing is part of what you want to do in Banff, I recommend this article from the Globe and Mail. Globe Banff Wildlife Big cats in the wild are really tough to casually encounter — […]

There’s Much to See and Do in Southern Alberta

Lethbridge is a fascinating city with a rich western history. First established as a trading post, it expanded with the coming of the railway and the development of coal mines. In the 1920s and 1930s it had the reputation of being the wickedest town in western Canada. It was noteworthy for its unchecked gambling, drinking and associated unsavoury activity. Now it is a town with a fine university and a number of highly civilized attractions. Dominating the city is a high-level railway bridge that is said to be the longest and highest of its type. The steel bridge, which replaced […]

Distant Views from the Calgary Tower

Calgary Tower is by no means the tallest building in Canada; in fact, it’s not even the tallest building in Calgary! So you may be wandering what’s the point, if nearby buildings tower over the one specifically designed as an observation tower! But despite this, the Calgary Tower is one of the city’s top attractions, and as someone who has visited, I personally recommend it! When the Calgary Tower was built, it was the tallest building in Calgary and the tallest in the country outside of Toronto. That was back in 1967, and when it was opened to the public […]

Edmonton’s Best Dog Walks – Part 2

On the weekend I revisited my old stomping grounds with my new pooch. There is a beautiful large off leash area in the same valley as the Valley Zoo. At the bottom of the hill leading to the zoo, you have the option to turn right (towards the zoo and Laurier Park) or left towards the rowing club and the off-leash area. There is parking along the road, a parking lot a little further around the bend, and overflow parking at the end of the road where the rowing club is. The hours to park in the rowing club lot […]

Edmonton’s Best Dog Walks – Part 3

This morning started off with a scramble and ended up with more lovely discoveries of Edmonton‘s glorious river valley. Because we were running late this morning, I ended up driving my daughter to school which had the potential to throw off my morning river valley walk. However, after I dropped her off at school, I parked the vehicle and headed with my dog down into the river valley. I took the trail down from Concordia College and alongside the golf course to the base of the Capilano Bridge. Wait, make that the Gretzky Bridge. (If you’re from Edmonton, you’ll know […]
