The town of Cochrane, just west of Calgary, has a distinctly western feel reflected in the local architecture. Here, in 1881, Senator Matthew Henry Cochrane started Alberta's first large-scale cattle ranch. Today this ranch is a designated historic site where you can picnic in lush parkland and hike lovely nature trails. A large bronze statue of a cowboy seated on horseback stands on a hilltop at the ranch site, reminding us of Alberta's heritage.
In town, be sure to sample the delicious ice cream made locally by the same family since 1948. Eye-catching arts and crafts created locally are available. Be sure to visit Studio West, a foundry and art gallery and watch a demonstration of the 3000 year old sculpting process known as lost wax. Outdoor activities in the area include horseback riding, hang gliding and canoe tripping. Take a side trip to the Western Heritage Centre, a cowboy ranch and interpretive centre, situated 2 km (1 mi.) north of Cochrane. Try your hand at skills such as branding cattle, shearing sheep or roping calves.
