Traditional gateway to Northern Alberta, the historic Town of Athabasca is situated ninety minutes north of Edmonton in the lovely Athabasca River Valley. The river was crucial to early explorers and settlers, forming part of a major waterway system which transported people and goods during the 1880s to early 1900s.

Today, modern Athabasca has emerged as the northern gateway for the growing electronics industry. Headquartered in town, Athabasca University is a world leader in distance education. Students complete courses through home study with materials delivered by post office, internet, telephone and teleconferencing. Athabasca also offers something for everyone such as hiking, bird watching, canoeing, kayaking, golfing, curling, skiing, snowmobiling and ice-fishing. History buffs will enjoy the various designated sites including the Old Brick School complex, constructed in 1913 and now housing the Nancy Appleby Theatre of Performing Arts. Rodeo fans should plan to visit on the August holiday weekend for this exciting annual event.

Athabasca accommodations offer a good selection of hotel, motel, bed and breakfast and campgrounds.
