Approximately 294 km (182.7 mi.) northeast of Edmonton is Alberta's newest city. Cold Lake became a city in 2000, when the towns of Grand Centre, Cold Lake and Medley (Canadian Forces Base 4 Wing) amalgamated. The military, oil and gas, and tourism form the economic base for this city of just over 11,500 people.

The significant military presence in Cold Lake is due to it being the home of two Canadian Air Force operational CF-18 Squadrons and two training squadrons, which have a 1.17 million hectare air weapons range to practice on. The annual Maple Flag Exercise, usually held for six weeks starting in mid-May, draws Air Forces and over 5,000 visitors from around the world. Cold Lake's proximity to the Athabasca Oil Sands in Fort McMurray is also engineering economic growth. Other attractions that draw tourists to Cold Lake include the lake itself which offers boating, fishing, and swimming opportunities. The Cold Lake Marina is Western Canada's largest inland marina. Kinosoo Beach is a favorite spot for relaxing after hiking the nearby trails. Birders will love the rich variety of birdlife in the area.

Book space early in the bed & breakfasts and hotels if you plan to visit Cold Lake in May/June.
