Established as a fort in 1874 by Colonel Macleod of the newly-formed North West Mounted Police to root out whiskey traders, Fort Macleod, on the Oldham River, is easily accessible on Highway 2 halfway between the international Canada USA border and the city of Calgary.
Downtown Fort Macleod boasts original architecture dating from 1897 through 1914. Spend time on a walking tour using self-guided pamphlets available from the Fort Macleod Tourist Office. Visit the Fort Macleod Museum with its reconstructed pioneer buildings and photographs of the Fort, the Mounted Police and the southern Alberta Indians. Enjoy the musical ride presented daily in the summer months by a mounted patrol. A short hop northwest of Fort Macleod is Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, a not-to-be-missed UNESCO designated heritage site. Used by native people for nearly 6000 years as an annual buffalo hunt site, the hunt provided food, clothing, shelter and tools. Today a seven storey interpretive centre, carved out of the cliff face, offers fascinating insight into the history and lifestyle of the southern Alberta Indians.
Fort Macleod accommodations include a variety of comfortable motels.
