Lethbridge Alberta is a vital focal point of Southern Alberta.
The lovely garden city of Lethbridge, third largest in Alberta, grew out of notorious Fort Whoop-Up. The Fort was established in 1869 by Americans wanting to trade illegal whiskey with the Plains Indians for buffalo skins and robes. They were routed by the North West Mounted Police in 1874 and Lethbridge was founded in its place. Situated 216 km (134 mi.) southeast of Calgary, the city is reputed to receive more annual hours of sunshine than any other spot in Canada.
Visit the interpretive centre at the reconstructed replica of Fort Whoop-Up. Don't miss the serenely beautiful Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden created in 1967 as a centennial project and symbolizing Japanese and Canadian friendship. Spend time in the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, the Bowman Arts Centre and the Sir Alexander Galt Museum and Archives. Picnic and hike the trails in Indian Battle Park. Stroll the stunning campus complex of the University of Lethbridge.
