A popular commuter suburb of Calgary, Okotoks is only about 18 km (11.2 mi.) south of the city. Canada's second fastest growing community, Okotoks' population grew by 46% from 2001 to 2006, and now has just over 17,000 residents. They celebrated the town's centennial in 2004.

The name Okotoks comes from the Blackfoot word for "Big Rock", which refers to the well known largest glacial erratic in the world, about 8 km west of the town. Now sitting peacefully on the floor of Sheep River Valley, the huge boulder called the erratic was carried to its resting place by glacial action during the last ice age. Nearby, the Sheep River itself offers fishing opportunities. In Okotoks, historians will enjoy visiting the Heritage House or taking the Heritage Walking Tour through downtown which gives an overview of the settlers' lives. Cowboys at heart will enjoy the Okotoks Pro Rodeo which is held at the end of August and attracts international participants, while the town celebrates the Old West with events and activities.

Okotoks presents travelers with a choice between bed & breakfasts, hotels, and RV/campgrounds.
