Situated at the confluence of the Peace, Heart and Smoky Rivers, Peace River is the second largest centre in northwestern Alberta. In 1792 renowned explorer Alexander Mackenzie established Fort Fork on the south shore of the Peace River, very close to the present day townsite. Settled initially by missionaries, the area was soon opened up by settlers interested in agriculture, forestry and, eventually, oil.
An early pioneer was the legendary prospector Henry Fuller Davis, commonly known as Twelve Foot Davis. Davis staked a gold mine claim on a tiny 3.5 m (12 ft.) plot between two existing claims and ended up a wealthy man. With the profits he opened a trading post near Peace River and became one of the local notables, famous for his generosity. Surrounded by beautiful rivers, streams and forests, Peace River offers year-round recreation such as golfing, canoeing, swimming, skiing and dogsledding. Don't miss the spectacular views of the Peace River Valley from local outlooks such as Sagitawa Lookout, Kaufman Hill, or Twelve Foot Davis' Gravesite.
Peace River accommodations include a variety of hotels and campgrounds.
