Tucked into the southwest corner of the province, Pincher Creek was established by the North West Mounted Police in 1878 as an outpost to raise replacement horses for the troops stationed at Fort Macleod. The beautiful grasslands near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains were ideal for this purpose. The town is situated on Highway 6 just south of Highway 3 which heads west to the most southerly route through the Rockies at Crowsnest Pass. Continuing south from Pincher Creek, Highway 6 ends at the entrance to Waterton Lakes National Park. Although the region near Pincher Creek was mined for coal in the early part of the 20th century, today the town is a centre for energy producing wind farms.

For a fascinating glimpse of the past, visit Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. Explore the dozen or so restored historic buildings and the many thousands of local artifacts depicting the life of pioneers and the North West Mounted Police. Brown, a local legend, was instrumental in establishing the Waterton Lakes area as a designated National Park.
