The City of Red Deer is named after the Red Deer River, which runs through the city. Oddly, the "red deer" in question were actually elk and British fur traders mistook the elk for a European red deer. Red Deer became a city in 1913 based on the strength of agriculture and its history as a trading post.
Red Deer is almost equidistant - about 145 km (90 mi.) - between Calgary and Edmonton. It is located off Highway 2.
One of the newer attractions of Red Deer is The Ghost Project. The ghost project was started by Red Deer Downtown Business Association in 1994. Bronze statues or "ghosts" created via the project must represent a significant person or event in Red Deer's history.
