Strathmore Accommodations
Strathmore Alberta Travel Information
Situated just east of Calgary, the charming town of Strathmore was established in 1883 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, which was instrumental in building the town's irrigation system. Strathmore became a major disembarking point for settlers pouring in from the USA and Europe during the early 20th century. A huge demonstration farm was set up to instruct new settlers, many of whom had never farmed. Growth of highway shipping in the 1950s saw the decline of railway freight business and the last track was finally removed in 1981. The irrigation system was turned over to its users in 1944 and still operates today, a living legacy from Strathmore's past.
Local activities include a Street Festival in late May or early June; the Canadian All Girls Rodeo in early June; the Farmer's Market held every Friday from June to September; the Canada Day celebrations on July 1st; the Fun Runners Annual Car Show and Shine in July; Heritage Days on the August long weekend; and the Women's Triathalon Event in mid-August. For the sports enthusiasts, there is local golfing, tennis, fishing, windsurfing and curling.
Strathmore accommodations include comfortable hotels, motels, campgrounds and RV parks.
