Vermilion is a town of about 4,435 people located 192 km (119.3 mi.) east of Edmonton along Highways 41 and 16. Largely an agricultural service town, Vermilion was incorporated as a town in 1906 and was named after the red clay found in the Vermilion River Valley. Vermilion is also home to Lakeland College.

The Vermilion Provincial Park extends along over 9 km (5.6 mi.) of the southern bank of the Vermilion River Valley, offering around 23 km (14.3 mi.) of trails. In summer the trails are popular for walking and hiking; in winter cross country skiers enjoy them. The Park also features a restored CN train station, camping, bird watching, and fishing, amongst its man-made lake and multiple athletic fields. History buffs will enjoy the Vermilion Heritage Museum's displays of the pioneering lifestyle. Visitors experience country life at the Vermilion Agricultural Society's annual Fair in July including a parade, trade show, animal judging, chuck wagon races, entertainment, and agricultural/horticultural displays. There are also several rodeos each year, including the Vermilion Rodeo that happens in May.

Vermilion offers comfortable accommodation at its hotels and RV/campgrounds.
