With a population of almost 2,500 people, Grimshaw is located at Mile Zero, the starting point of the important northern supply route known as the Mackenzie Highway. That's about 179 km (111.2 mi.) north of Grande Prairie and only 21 km (13.0 mi.) away from Peace River. Grimshaw's economy is driven by its being a transportation hub, a support centre for oil and gas exploration in the Mackenzie Region, and an agriculture and forestry centre.

The Mile Zero Monument marks the start of the Mackenzie Highway. Grimshaw's Tourist Booth is in an old train caboose in the center of town. Nearby is the Antique Truck Museum, host of the Annual Trucker Reunion. The North Peace Stampede Grounds racetrack and viewing stands are home of the annual stampede. A few km out of Grimshaw are 4.5 km (2.8 mi) of hiking trails at Queen Elizabeth Provincial Park at Lac Cardinal. Over 160 species of bird can be spotted from the bird viewing platform. Open year round, the Park offers cross country ski trails and a skating rink in wintertime. Next to the Park is Lac Cardinal Regional Pioneer Village Museum with a town of 1920's to 1940's buildings and artifacts on display.
