The town of Banff is inside the boundaries of Banff National Park. The park's beginnings go back to 1885 when the first 26 sq. km (10 sq. mi.) were set aside surrounding the hot springs at the base of Sulpher Mountain. The park is now 6641 sq. km (2564 sq. mi.) of wilderness and wildlife.

In 1888 the famous Banff Springs Hotel opened for business by the Canadian Pacific Railway. The railway was the only way to get to the park until the first car found its way in 1911. The drive from Calgary to Banff is memorable because of the transition from plains to foothills to spectacular mountains.

The outdoor activities are extensive all year round with skiing and other in winter and trail riding and hiking. The opportunity to see wildlife close to town makes visits special. Remember though, even the herbivorous elk are dangerous and must be viewed at a safe distance. Make sure to view wildlife at a safe distance.

Check out the Banff Park Museum, a national historic site, for a better understanding of the natural environment. Its exhibits cover the changes in understanding of natural history. The architectural style of the 1903 log building is an example of early buildings in the Park.

Banff accommodations include bed and breakfasts, hotels, motels and resorts.
