Fort Saskatchewan's history dates back to 1875 when the Northwest Mounted Police built a fort on the North Saskatchewan River. Fort Saskatchewan was incorporated as a Village in 1899, as a Town in 1904 and as a City in 1985. Around 20 km (12.4 mi.) northeast of Edmonton, the City is home to almost 15,000 people. Agriculture and heavy industry share the economic base, with companies such as Dow Chemical, Shell Canada, and Agrium providing much of the City's employment.
Fort Saskatchewan's historic landmarks can be seen at the Fort Saskatchewan Museum and Historical Site which includes eight heritage buildings decorated with period antiques that form a historical village. Highlights of the village include the Old Courthouse, the original Fort, and a collection featuring the NWMP. Walkers, hikers and bikers will enjoy the parks and trails in the River Valley nearby. Animal lovers will enjoy seeing the sheep that graze grass and weeds in the city's Legacy Park during summer months. Expert shepherds and sheep dogs delight visitors with demonstrations. The Dow Centennial Centre contains two pavilions including an art gallery, theatre, pottery studio and conference rooms in one and extensive athletic facilities in the other.
Visitors can find rest and relaxation in Fort Saskatchewan's Bed & Breakfasts and Hotels.
