High Level Alberta Travel Information
Named after the height of the land between the Hay River and the Peace River, High Level is in northern Alberta midway between Edmonton and Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. About 733 km (455.5 mi.) north of Edmonton, the town is located at mile 180 of the Mackenzie Highway where it meets Highway 58. High Level is young, being founded as recently as 1965 and with about half of the roughly 4,000 people who make it their home being under 25 years old. Oil and forestry are major economic engines, with two wood mills including Alberta's largest sawmill, and the large oil and gas fields of Rainbow Lake and Zama nearby.
Its flag portrays High Level as the Crossroads of the North, but today it's also known as the Gateway to the South. Either way, High Level offers a truly northern experience. Visit the Mackenzie Crossroads Heritage Museum, a re-created trading post with almost 2,000 artifacts. It's a true Alberta town with a summer rodeo each year. The wilderness offers many fishing and hunting opportunities, as well as abundant birdlife with over 150 species. In winter snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are popular pastimes.
Enjoy northern hospitality at one of High Level's hotels.
