High River Accommodations
High River Alberta Travel Information
This town of almost 11,000 people is just 20 minutes or 37 km (23 mi.) south of Calgary where Highways 2 and 23 meet. High River is named after the Highwood River which runs through town and often overflows its banks in the Spring. Its economy has always centered around ranching, although there was also a Royal Canadian Air Force base nearby from 1921 through 1944. The town is well known as former Prime Minister Joe Clark's birthplace, and was also background for Smallville in Superman III.
Murals showing High River's history can be seen on many buildings around town. High River has maintained a western image through hosting several rodeos a year including in 2006 the North America chuckwagon racing championship races. In even numbered years the Museum of the Highwood organizes local historic homes tours. The Museum itself can be found downtown in the historic CPR station, and displays a history of the Highwood River basin. The High River Highland Games is an annual celebration of Scottish culture in the town. Park lovers should find their way to the 13 treed acres and historic homes of Sheppard Family Park, and to the popular baseball diamond and picnic/BBQ area at George Lane Park downtown.
Enjoy some western hospitality at one of High River's Bed & Breakfasts or Hotels.
