Leduc, located 33 km (20.5 mi.) south of Edmonton, is home to the Edmonton International Airport. Leduc is also well known as the place where Alberta's oil industry began - when the drillers connected with the large Leduc oil field through the Leduc No. 1 on February 13, 1947. The Alberta oil boom had begun. Sixty years later oil and gas still drives much of the town's economy, supporting Leduc's major industrial park Nisku. Many of the roughly 15,000 Leduc residents work at the Airport, in Nisku, or commute to Edmonton.
The Canadian Petroleum Interpretive Centre features the history of the oil patch. For earlier history, visit the Alberta Heritage Exposition Park which displays a home, church and school from the pioneering days. Walkers will enjoy the walking path system that passes by the Civic Centre, the Black Gold Centre, and the Performing Arts Centre, as well as residential neighborhoods and parks. And being close to the international airport, enjoyable hours can always be whiled away watching airplanes.
A convenient overnight resting spot, Leduc hosts visitors in hotels and campgrounds.
