Named after Edson J. Chamberlain, General Manger of the Grande Trunk Pacific Railroad in 1911. The railroad helped to transform access to the rich Alberta Coal Branch which Edson served as a supply depot as the railroad surged westward.

Recreation activities consist of an 18 hole golf course, hockey, tennis, soccer, skiing, hiking, boating, and fishing. Attractions such as the Red Brick Arts Centre and Museum, Silver Summit Ski Hill, and a wide selection of cross country ski trails appeal to the western tourist. Close proximity to the spectacular McLeod River also offers an excellent array of outdoor recreational activities.
