If you are a birdwatcher, flock to the Ellis Bird Farm where you can stroll through a collection of gardens and observe a variety of bird species.
Located just north of Red Deer in the heart of Alberta's parkland, Lacombe is a beautifully kept town with a main street that has recently been authentically restored. The town is committed to bridging the past and the present, and the historical society operates a blacksmith shop downtown, which is open to visitors. Nearby Aspen Beach Provincial Park was the first provincial park declared in Alberta, and there is plenty of opportunity for swimming, hiking, and bird watching.
This community between the cities of Edmonton and Calgary is known for its friendly hospitality.
Situated in the gently rolling parkland of Central Alberta, Red Deer is a prosperous city with plenty to offer visitors. Red Deer is situated on the 'Boomtown Trail', a connected collection of communities with the distinct architecture of the Boomtown period still maintained. Set off on a self-guided tour of these communities or take part in a guided tour aboard an authentic steam-train. Red Deer took its name from Scottish settlers who mistook the elk in the area for the red deer of their homeland. The city is close to the Lake Country's Sylvan and Gull Lakes.
Delve into the rich history of the fur trade at the Rocky Mountain House National Historic Park where marked trails take you through four original fur trading posts.
What is now a timber, agriculture, oil and gas resource center was once the site of four fur trading posts in the early nineteenth century. The National Historic Park site features a walking trail system where audio guides and illustrated signs take visitors from post to post. For the nature enthusiast, there are several signs depicting the plants of the region as well as other natural points of interest. Wildlife near Rocky Mountain House includes elk, deer, mountain goats, bears, and bighorn sheep. Outdoor activities such as golf, white water rafting, canoeing and trail riding are among the most popular things to do while visiting.
Visit the world's largest painted Ukrainian Easter egg!
The first settlers in Vegreville were of Ukrainian heritage, and today the town boasts its heritage with its humungous Easter egg (the world's largest, in fact, standing 9 m/30 ft high.) In July, the Pysanka (Ukrainian Easter Egg) festival showcases Ukrainian culture and features the country's best Ukrainian dancers.
Whitecourt is built at the fork of four rivers, so water sports such as fishing and boating are always popular here.
A water sport lover's paradise, Whitecourt is the meeting point of the McLeod, Athabasca, and Eagle Rivers, as well as the Beaver Creek. The town hosts family riverboat races and rallies each year. In the winter, Whitecourt is the snowmobile capital of Alberta.
