Around 200 km (124.3 mi.) southeast of Edmonton in the agricultural lands where Highways 41 and 14 meet, lies the town of Wainwright. This town of around 5,365 residents is a stopping point on the Buffalo Trail, also known as Highway 41. Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, with its 620 km2 (239.4 mi2) artillery, armored and infantry-training area, lies to the immediate South of the town.

Tourists can visit the Bud Cotton Buffalo Paddock, where the original Buffalo National Park was established in 1908 and from where buffalo have been relocated worldwide from the endangered species project. Spot the large roadside statue of a buffalo on your way around town. Buffalo Days at the end of August each year celebrate the cowboy heritage. Professional cowboys including chuckwagon races can be seen at the rodeo that's held each June. The rich harvest from local farms can be seen at the annual Agricultural Fair, and purchased at the Farmer's Market. Railroad history may be witnessed at the new Railroad Museum. Wildlife enthusiasts will also enjoy the neighboring countryside where they may view white tail and mule deer, and migrating ducks and geese, or go fishing in a nearby stream.

Enjoy some rural hospitality at Wainwright's bed & breakfasts, hotels or RV/campgrounds.
