Elkwater townsite is at the western edge of the Cypress Hills 65 km (40 mi.) southeast of Medicine Hat. Elkwater is located within Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park on Elkwater Lake.

Wildlife found in the park includes white-tailed deer, coyote, elk, wild turkey (introduced), cougar and moose (also introduced).

Cypress Hills Park has much for recreation including hiking, biking, boating, golf and winter sports.

Elkwater accommodations include a lodge and campgrounds.
