Lac La Biche is one of Alberta's oldest communities. Its history dates back to a reference by David Thompson in 1798. Located on the shores of the lake Lac La Biche around 220 kms (136.7 mi.) northeast of Edmonton, today the town has a population of almost 2,800 people. The diverse economy includes forestry, oil and natural gas, tourism, and agriculture.
Lac La Biche is in lake country, with around 150 lakes offering watersport activities, and many with beaches and camping, in the area. The largest island of the lake Lac La Biche supports Sir Winston Churchill Island Park with old growth forest campsites and excellent bird watching. Just east of Lac La Biche is Lakeland Provincial Park with over 200 species of birds and a recorded 43 species of mammals. In town, Pow Wow days in August celebrate the town's diverse cultural heritage through a jamboree, multicultural dancing, horseshoe tournament and sailboat rally. Also popular is the catch and release family fishing derby.
Its first tourist accommodation, the Lac La Biche Inn, was opened in 1916. Today, visitors can select from Lac La Biche's bed & breakfasts, hotels, and RV/Campgrounds.
Our Lac La Biche motel accommodations have rooms to fit every budget and comfort level, including more than a dozen Executives Suites (many featuring Jacuzzis and Fireplaces) Family suites, large standard suites, and full kitchenettes. Conference rooms are available with full catering. The Northern Lights Dining Room offers fine dining with a full menu with the best steaks in Northern Alberta.
